COMPLETE. WASTE. OF. TIME. I painfully forced myself to watch the series because I wanted to judge for myself to determine if all the negative reviews were coming from overly offended and critical people, or if the show really was a terrible series. And sure enough, everyone is RIGHT. This show failed in so many several ways.
1. Casting - Christian Serratos. Yes everyone already knows she didnt have the same skin color or body type as Selena. It was disappointing that the Selena had no indigenous characteristics to her face that grasped the true "tejana" look. It was whitewashed to say the least.
However, she as an actress could've easily overcame that dilemma had she brilliantly embraced the unique personality of Selena that attracted her to her huge fan base that she still holds to this day. However, she failed miserably at portraying the tejana/mexican chicana girl that we all grew to fall in love with.
2. Felt Rushed. The show failed at diving deeper into interpersonal relationships and conflicts that draw in more audience and peak the interest of the fans. Instead, it focused on boring scenes of record deals, the father controlling Selena, and Selena giggling her way to stardom which is not an accurate representation of the true Selena. It rushed through her life in short episodes that skipped over many significant details of her life.
3. What does Selena really like besides dying her hair??? - The show failed at portraying Selenas hobbies, interests, favorite foods, religion and spiritual beliefs and, and what she enjoyed doing in her offtime when she wasn't singing or making music. Does anyone know that Selena was actually studying the Bible with Jehovahs witnesses? No, ofcourse not. Because this show chose to take a different path and instead highlight her success as a singer but not her struggles as a human being trying to discover who she was..
I dont believe Selena was the main character in this series. It was definitely her father.
Final verdict: is the show worth watching? If your a Selena fan, yes, watch the show and determine for yourself.
Im sure it will do a better job and attracting a more younger fan base in the 13 years and younger age group. However, for the more mature audience, we know better.
Warning- you will be disappointed.
