So I only got through the first half hour of this movie, saying that the original is probably up there in at least my top 15 favorite animated movies, this was a let down. Here are my problems with the movie in no particular order.
1) Animation. While the animation is very well-made, it is a little to glossy, there is little to no texture and things just feel like they are made of plastic. I want to see some roughness. Even when(spoiler alert in case you haven't even seen the original) ... ... ... Ash dies, he looks much more like metal than rock, I have a problem with this because rock looks way more cold and therefore, deathly. I know I said I watched the first half hour, but I skipped through to the end just to write this review. Also, I sometimes found that dialogue was not directly fit with mouth movement, I know animation can only be so good, but this is a 2019 movie. The original paired animation with audio better. And while the animation was stunning, I am a man who likes simple yet powerful visuals, the original did a great job at this, while this movie, ehh, let's just say it wasn't necessary. And don't even get me started on the fire of the Ponytas. When I saw them at the final battle, they just looked disgusting.
2) Voice acting. I know we can't get the same exact voice acting that we did all those years ago. However, I can't get over Misty and Brock's voices, especially Misty's. They are just WAY to far off for my taste. A lot of people who watched this movie wanted to see what they loved from the past, but just refined. These voices, he voice, is just unbearable for me.
3) Emotion. Mewtwo is very weak character. Very little personality and very bleak, bland, plain. Doesn't come off as deep as the original one. The original Mewtwo could feel more dangerous and threatening at times, but also more relatable and compassionate. Now, while the ending of Evolution still struck a cord with me, and I will be honest, it rivals the ending of the original, it certainly doesn't surpass it. As I was watching it, I was thinking how much worse it is and looking for what it did better, but honestly, it was just as good as before.
Don't ask me about music, I am not musically skilled enough to judge a movie's soundtrack. I can only say if I liked it, but I skipped through the majority of the movie. So what does my opinion mean, go see it for yourself.
And TBH, Misty and all the other females were flat af, 0/10, pls fix this bug.
