Many people think this is not as good as Nirvana in Fire, but I honestly think this is a lot better. The action sequences are weak compared to NIF, but the chemistry is off the charts. I like that the characters were not perfect and made plenty of mistakes. Mei Changsu in NIF was way too perfect and way too smart. He made too few mistakes. Another reason I like this show is because this show is the biggest tease I have ever seen. (spoiler alert! Don’t scroll down if you haven’t finish watching.) We get an amazingly sizzling almost kiss. We get one and only one amazingly poetic kiss. We get tense almost sex scene and then we get a very depressing suicide right when we think they are going to marry each other. Talk about a show being a tease!!! Most people seem to hate the ending but I really like it. If she didn’t commit suicide and married Ning Yi, she would have condemned her mother’s and her own soul to destruction, never to reincarnate. I am glad she is not that inconsiderate. Not to mention she is prime candidate for use in future schemes, making Ning Yi’s reign difficult and possibly causing more unnecessary deaths. Plus the guilt of knowing that if she had died in infancy, her adopted family (mother, twin brothers,and father), her teacher, Zhong Chen, her husband, Helian Zheng, and many loyal followers, etc. would probably still be alive. I think it really is too much for one person to handle. That being said, I love the story and characters so much, I still wish for a second season. The Feng Zhiwei in the book was more cold-hearted so I can see her overcoming sadness, but the Feng Zhiwei in this series was more sweet and emotional, so I can’t see her character doing that. Maybe give Feng Zhiwei amnesia because that is the only way I can see for her to be truly happy without having to carry around so much sadness. She would still be a amazing person, but she can start over with Ning Yi and only gather happy memories in the future. But they both still can’t marry. This shouldn’t be much of a problem since they are both iconoclasts.
