I was shocked to see the relatively positive reviews for this film after leaving the cinema. I, like many others, am a fan of the first film and love a good historical epic. For me, this missed the mark on so many levels. The plot just makes no sense. The lead character changes his mind about extremely key parts of the story on a whim, and the plot just seems to do whatever is needed to move it on, regardless if it is nonsensical. I would love to share the areas in which the film just takes so many strange choices, but I won't due to not wanting to put spoilers out there. But I would just encourage you to really think about the motivations of the main character, and how much sense they make as they chop and change. I gave the film two stars as there are some genuinely well choreographed fight scenes, and Denzel does his best to steal every scene he is in, despite his storyline also being completely unbelievable. Also, if you go into the film remembering Maximus as a infallible hero, be prepared to learn that he didn't care as much about that wife that drove him towards his revenge as much as he said he did.
