I checked this film out in the TV pages and decided it was not my type, but when I was unable to find anything else decided to give it a go anyway.
I went through pretty much the complete range of emotions available from tut-tut annoyance with the idea that such a thing was happening to this girl (Precious) and more telling on my part that this girl was allowing it to happen to her at all, but quickly found myself wishing I was there to help her out of this mess she found herself in purely by accident of birth, while feeling helpless at being unable to do so and thankful at the same time that it was not me, I would have beaten her Mother to a pulp...!
I found the film extraordinary in that it was able to generate such levels of base feeling which -ultimately- turned to satisfaction and a sense of justice at last being done when Mo'nique (Mary the girls' Mother) was finally cast adrift by her daughter who undoubtedly went on to create a better life for herself and her children under her own new-found ability and determination to break free of the suppression she had clearly endured for so long. The entire cast deserves praise for the human spirit they captured and portrayed in the face of adversity even if it was only make-believe, the director (Lee Daniels) must have thanked his lucky stars when given this hotch-potch of completely disparate characters to work with only to find that they blended and worked so well together, the script was well judged and written, the only complaint I can muster is that I wasn't there to beat her Mother to a pulp...
