Code Geass is a unique mixture of a lot of genres, themes and anime tropes. It has a loveagle supporting cast, though some members are annoying, forgettable and useless. The msin characters Lelouch and Suzaku are actu all the highlight of the show, guiding you away from the issues with it. But as a person who just finished R2, I really think the seris has some flaws.
Story. Yes it looks good after the dramatic ending, but Code Geass is filled with filler that can either be fun, or feel like an utter waste of time. It also has a LOT of unexplained stuff that is majorly linked to the story like (spoilers incoming) Geass, the Sword of Akasha, The Geass society with their "experiments", How V2 became a holder of Geass, why his nanny is a ninja and The collective conciousness. It's honestly a shame with how much is unexplored which makes the show even more confusing and theory riddled.
The main plot focuses on Lelouch trying to make a better world devoid of random murder and fighting and death and...Wait isn't that EXCATLY what Lelouch does? The hypocrisy just keeps going with Lelouch and even though in the end you say hey it was worth it, thas the END. The series also focuses on Strategy. The issue? The show has shallow strategy at times. Unlike Light from Death Note, Lelouch just has resources. He happend to just have enough money to buy a cool truck. He just happens to get cool costumes. He just happens to have to Gilbert under his control when he needs to. It's ridiculous that the show gives you so much hype only to have Lelouch use a few smart strategives again and again.
But the story has its bright side. R1 is much stronger than R2, probably because it has fun momments mixed with serious missions, it builds characters enough to make you care and like them, and the show promises to expand on the unknown in R2...Which it barely does. But R1 is an original mix of genres and creativity and it's easy to love because of that. You don't see Code Geass R1 anywhere.
Animation. It's a common trope for anime to lack body proportion diversity, but Code Geass is too far. Everyone is incredibly lanky, all the girls have the same face shape and even some have the same EYES. The hair is the onlly thing that really defines a characters face, and it's kind of annoying seeing Lelouch have the same body as Suzaku even though he's significantly less fit. The Mech fights are pretty dope, and really deliver with fast paced animation and typical mid fight talk from sworn enemies. The motion is as good as it gets and Scenery is incredibly memorable.
Overall Code Geass gets an 7.8/10:
For its Ambition, Unique genre mix, strong characters, strong animation. No 8 because the story of R2 is such a mess it's even hard to remember the last 8 episodes properly.
