[SPOILERS] Short stories are hard to perfect. This one just doesn't hit the mark for me.In terms of characters, Rainsford has no personality and there isn't any time to form an opinion on him. Zaroff's entire personality is about being a rich psychopath. I found the plot to be ridiculously predictable. I knew that Zaroff hunted people almost immediately as he began speaking. It was clear from the beginning of the hunt that Rainsford would win too. As for the message, I thought that it was supposed to be a commentary on humanity and why we are so different from animals, except executed very poorly. A friend of mine thought it was supposed to be about why hunting is wrong. For my theory, it doesn't pan out or elaborate in an interesting way and for my friend's theory, the plot doesn't justify it because Rainsford kills Zaroff in the end, so isn't he just as bad? This isn't necessarily the worst piece of literature I've ever read, but it doesn't work for me. Neither the characters or the plot is captivating and the message is lacking or not worked through enough.
