Mesmerizing visuals, and the foundations of a great mythic adventure but fails at a storytelling level. It's a movie you watch with high hopes and as it plays out you're waiting for the "click" where the choices the filmmakers have made pay off -- but that moment never comes.
What you're left with is a collection of memorable visual moments but little else.
Maybe it was the filmmakers intention to create a dreamlike experience with the same level of incomprehension that dreams have. But the difference is we have no choice and are unconscious when dreaming -- that's not the case with watching a movie.
My conscious brain wanted more narrative meat on the symbolic bones. A brain can't survive on visual symbolism alone!
