House of the Witch? More like house of the WATCH THIS NOW. Sublime character acting from Hollywood’s brightest ingenue(s). You’ll be glad you caught them this early, as I smell Academy Awards in the pipeline for this talented bunch.
The plot variously whips and nae-naes around a common theme, and throws some curveballs in, such as cleverly only referring to the outside world once, leaving us wondering why. Some would say reckless: I would say avant garde. The lack of continuity only other seen in the narrative writing of a Kindergarten child is a choice only the brave would make.
“Witch” borrows from classic horror pastiche - a wholesome, white-picket- plucky yet-foolhardy suburban set of teens who’ve stumbled across an ancient, 30-year-old haunted McMansion stuffed with dust-sheeted chairs made of demons, but the script keeps it ever-fresh with unexpected lines such as “There was a door and then there wasn’t a door!”
Pace seems to be an afterthought - an ingenious way of keeping the tiktok generation gripped.
Such is the quality of the production, when the protagonist gets dragged into the depths of a muddy pond by the ghostly grip of disembodied hands, you’ll feel right there with her. It’s up to you whether you want to be dragged out again.
