I had read the book (when it was first published) but had not seen the film until today. I concur with the majority of comments already shown below; I agree that it is difficult to condense the 800 pages of an excellent book into 2 & half hour film and think that the film does a good job mostly. It is not easy to convey the inner thoughts and feelings of the characters as written in the book, hence the reason why the film has not succeeded as well as the book. I did find the emotion portrayed in the film to be as near as possible to the book itself but the (ending of the film) could have perhaps been better and reflected the sentiments in the closing pages of the book. This would have gained additional stars from me and the film may have done better at the box office. It is a good film and time did not drag while watching it as some have written.

An excellent adaptation of Dune by Dennis Villeneuve, I would say that without knowing ( or reading) the source novel a casual viewer will be confused. Some of the early dialogue is very quiet (on blu-ray) and can make the set up scenes even more difficult to understand than need be. Despite this if viewers stick with it (or re-watch!) the film is very good and you will be rewarded with an unbelievable story and the beginning of the Dune Saga. The acting, special effects, score and cinematography is breathtaking; making Arrakis a believable place. Roll on Part Two in 2023!
