The segment on the cracked high rise housing was very poor journalism.
We were told over and over that the buildings had faults and the residents had to vacate. Who is responsible? Who is going to pay for rectification? The owners should not be out of pocket. The taxpayer should not have to pay for shoddy buildings or shoddy materials. Builders should have insurance to cover rectification if faults occur. Certifiers should not be paid by Builders. Certifiers should not be allowed to approve all the units in a high rise block just by approving one or two units in the block. When I worked as an architect in the 1970's, architects inspected work and were paid by the building owner, not the builder. Councils employed certifiers who were independent public servants with no financial ties to builders.
Materials were tested by the CSIRO scientists who again were independent public servants. Architects could specify materials approved by CSIRO with confidence.Today it seems like the Wild West and the crooks are not accountable. The ABC 4 corners program in recent times did a better job by far than your 60 minutes segment.
