As an "Appalachian" myself, I was a bit confused about the overall message. It first confronts the false stereotypes of the people of Appalachia as dumb, lazy, and uneducated, leads the viewer through many examples and reasons why this isn't true, I loved it up to that point. But then, in a turn of event, because of the way the vote went in 2016, the stereotypes are dumped back on the heads of the people, especially the ones who voted contrary to the Democratic ticket, and thus written off as, once again, socially dumb and politically uneducated. When a group of people are viewed through the narrow lens of the two political parties, I find that the perception can be a bit skewed. I'm pretty sure this happened to what would have been an awesome documentary.
