Can be summed up in two words.
Anarchic and allegorical.
Presented alternately in black and white and colour giving it atmospheric depth to emphasise it’s allegorical portrayal of how British society is controlled by class and fear.
Excellent direction, acting, continuity and photography giving its audience much more than entertainment.
Using a disturbing portrayal of public school life for its allegorical message it also raises the question as to why any parent would subject their children to such physical and mental torture. Other than to brutalise them, when adults, against their “lesser” contemporaries.
And why teachers and senior students would inflict such cruelty on weaker vulnerable boys other than to perpetuate a class system in which war and conflict are its major activities. (and pleasures)
An important film with important messages.
