The treatment of Will and his family add the real element that horror comes from human nature. Paul, shown as a rational, just person earlier ..turns paranoid, but he could have allowed Will to leave with family. Will was only using the gun to be allowed to leave and keep his family safe. 2nd element of fear is nightmares...the movie erases the line between reality and nightmares...which is why they are scary!
