Denzel was phenomenal, as is expected. In fact, expectations are very high when Denzel is the main character in a movie. Did this meet those expectations? Yes and no. We saw a stellar performance from Denzel. The movie slowly built the character of Roman, and we accidentally fell in love. We even laughed off his ultimately bad decision because we enjoyed watching him eat the maple bacon donuts in Santa Monica that he’d always dreamed of. In reality though, we knew he’d done something wrong, and he knew he’d done something wrong. At that point, there was no win for him, so both the character and the plot were destined to crumble. I felt he could have represented the old spirit of civil rights activists living in modern day society, adding fuel to the fire to keep it burning strongly. Instead, his flame burnt out, too, and when he realized it was weakening, it was too late because of what he’d done. I could go on... Great movie for conversation!!!!!! Loved Denzel.
