I normally don’t post reviews. Nevertheless, I felt that I must respond to some of the negative reviews(everyone is entitled to their viewpoints). It seems that some were offended by the reference to the violence, grittiness and other mature content in this Christmas special. Not to mention the profanity because everyone knows there was no profanity in the 19th century. Also some were upset that this 3 hour magnum opus/masterpiece didn’t follow exactly the story line of the Dicken’s classic novel.
Really? Who cares? 🤷♂️ The FX version built the story into something much much different than what we are use to seeing or reading.
This adaptation was darker, grittier and more frightening I loved how they handled the character of Jacob Marley. The scene where he spoke to the ghost of Christmas past in purgatory was one of the best as well as the scene where Scrooge receives his first visitation from Marley in which Steven Knight(the writer of this production) adds a “Peaky Blinders” and “Taboo” style to it.
I also prefer this portrayal of Scrooge because we not only see a “mean and miserly old man” but we see a damaged and hurt young man(in his mid 40s or early 50s) who also happens to suffers from OCD. This particular character/take on of Ebenezer Scrooge was as shocking as it was complex.
The 3 hour run time was no problem at all. I wish it had been much longer. Like I said before, ignore the negative reviews and think for yourself(don’t allow others think for you). This miniseries/movie is a real treat to watch it.
My Rating: 9/10
