I was forced to watch a movie by sitting in the front row after 22 years. We watched Odiyan at Burjuman Vox Cinema, Dubai yesterday( 16 Dec 2018). The theatre was house full.
The movie was overall good. The story plot is based on people called Odiyans (Covert assassins) lived between Kerala - Tamilnadu borders in palakkad who changed their jobs once electricity arrived into our villages. The story is about the last Odiyan lived in Thenkurrissi village, Palakkad.
We can watch this movie once because of
- Excellent Cinematography
- Superb Action scenes. The climax stunt was outstanding.
- Acting of Mohanlal and Manju Warrior
- Good story line even though screen play is average.
We should forgive
- Failure to keep consistency in using Palakkadan slang ( The village in the movie is around 4 km from Kannadi , my native village and I know the slang very well). Not every actor consistently speaks the native tounge.
- Director failed to establish the timeline. We have to think hard to identify the present year when movie is happening. ( Around 1955 and 1970). We can work backwards to conclude the years once you know when Kerala villages got electricity.
- Mohanlal in 20s exiled from the village and came back after 15 years but in his 60s.
- Prakash Raj looked same ( all other actors became old) even after 15 years.
- A romantic song in the second half at a wrong place when the story was getting tensed.
- Some long scenes with slow paced dialogue delivery ( one at the beginning when Mohanlal accepted the challenge to do last Odi Vela) gave us a dramatic feeling.
Overall it is a good watch but the director missed a big opportunity by restricting a block buster to a potential super hit.
P.S: Everyone who have been to Thenkurrissi, Kinnasery, Kannadi, Kongad villages in Palakkad must watch since they might able to recognise some of the shooting locations.
