This movie was a bit of a disappointment for me
My expectations:
When this movie was announced, I hoped would rival Captain America and the Winter Soldier as a spy action thriller.
What I liked:
The Red Guardian and Yelena were excellent additions to the MCU, their characters were humorous and interesting, unlike some of the other characters of the movie. I thought Taskmaster was a cool villain but I felt that she was underused in this movie and they should have shown more scenes showing her abilities. Scarlett Johansson did a fabulous job as Natasha, as always. This movie was a bit more dark than other MCU movies, which I liked because it added an extra layer to the movie. It is great that the MCU is generous with the amount of action in this movie.
What I didn't like:
I mentioned this earlier, Taskmaster's abilities should have been shown more and it annoyed me that her fight scene against the Red Guardian wasn't just one full fight scene that I could enjoy.
The plot was very messy and I felt that the first half of the movie was too slow. The first time I watched the movie, I was confused about the main plot mainly because the villain only showed up at the end of the movie and his motives were unclear. I also thought that Drekov was a very bland villain, much like Malekith in Thor the Dark world. There isn't much substance to Drekov, and he was just "another man behind an evil organization who wishes to control the world". For people watching this movie who aren't diehard fans of the MCU, Drekov would most likely been forgotten as he is one of the most forgettable MCU villains.
I also feel like character moments didn't feel earned given the characters' past. I am under the impression that Natasha's "family" had just been reunited, and the last time they all saw each other was during the beginning scene. When Yelena and Natasha meet, I feel like there was too much forced humor which didn't feel right. Yelena had just recently been freed from Drekov's control and it doesn't seem like she has any of the right emotions, as she immediately jumps into being the comedic younger sister. When Yelena and the Red Guardian bond in Melina's home, it didn't feel right as the last time they had seen each other, the Red Guardian had abandoned her. I just feel like all the family bonding scenes in Melina's home were rushed so the characters would be more connected in the final act. Finally, there are too many plot holes in this movie. For example, how did the Red Guardian acquire the super soldier serum? If it was supplied by Drekov, it would make sense if he controlled an army of super soldiers as well as an army of Red Room assassins. How did Natasha's friend even acquire the Quinjet? (Also Natasha's friend seemed like a forced character put into the movie to just supply Natasha with vehicles and other things. This character was so bland that when I was watching the movie and saw the character, I just referred to him as "the guy I saw earlier".) Back to plot holes, I wish they would have shown how Natasha escaped from Ross, I really disliked how they transitioned to the next scene instead of focusing on what happened.
Final thoughts:
Black Widow just seemed like a movie to introduce Yelena and the Red Guardian. This movie didn't have a sense of danger to it because we already know Natasha's fate in Endgame and it would have been given a better rating if it was released in 2016. Other than that, this movie would have made a fine standalone action film. When you put it in the MCU, it feels out of place and confusing. I hope they fix up the plot holes in the movie and this is a 6/10 movie.
