The rape scenes were too graphic for the amount of warning offered up in the advertisements. The movie had some positive aspects, but not enough to make up for the mountains of emotional work rape survivors will need to do when they are surprised by the detail of the rape scene - and then have to sit through it again when it's portrayed later from the woman's point of view.
I strongly recommend that survivors of abuse do as much of their own research as possible ahead of seeing this movie. My suggestion is that the artistic choices of how the rape scenes are portrayed are enough to trigger a wide variety of abuse survivors. Maybe those scenes will help to educate those who have not been abused about the reality of horror experienced by rape....? I don't know why the moviemakers decided to go into such deep detail in portraying the rape scenes, but I hope my review will offer a warning ahead of time for those who may want to avoid watching a rape scene - twice.
