The film certainly had a dark, foreboding and sinister feel in the beginning but as it progressed it turned more into a modern film about current social issues intertwined with a teen coming of age diary narration film. It was strange and out of place. What does a fairy tale set in the medieval primal forests of Germany have to do with gender identity issues or racialized social issues?. I was really looking forward to a dark, even horror retelling of a classic fairy tale. Can't a film just be a film to be considered good these days without being saturated with the social struggle du jour?. Disappointing.
