Who was this movie for? No, really, who was this for???
How many times do we have to relive this trauma of being gay and different in lesbian movies? This is a Christmas movie. We can't even have a happy cute Christmas movie? I get that being gay can be controversial and difficult but how is anything ever going to change if we don't try to normalize it in FICTION. Don't even get me started on how it's supposed to be a comedy.
How many other lesbian movies are just as painful if not more painful than this one? I just want one normal non hypersexual movie about lesbians in love is that too much to ask for? Stop making gay people re-live trauma just because some people find it relatable. Straight people can have interesting movies with complex storylines about romance that doesn't center around them being straight. Why do Lesbians either have to be softcore or intensely painful drama?
The only thing good about this movie was the youngest sister and Kristen Stuart. Kristen did a phenomenal job showing so much depth and dynamic.
And then there were the children. Using black/mixed race children as a tool to add negative dynamic to a white mother, having them steal nonetheless? They were props not people and it was extremely unsettling to watch. I'm not saying the casting director should have chosen white children. I just think the writers should have been read the room before making specific decisions.
This movie left me feeling used, unsettled, and thinking "what were they thinking?"
