Maisie Day

The florida project has always been one of my favourite movies. The acting isn’t the best and the plot is a bit rubbish but as a whole it is just a nice and warm movie to watch. It is based around the life of a child (Moonee) who lives in a budget motel with her single, young mother (Halley). With what she has, the girl lives a happy life, playing with her friends, making a lot of mischief. Moonee had not been raised well so, along with her friends, they are quite rude and badly behaved, but who can blame them when this is the life they have. It is difficult to explain what happened in this movie because the plot was just really empty, nothing much happened. The only distinctive points in the plot is after Moonee and her friends burn an abandoned house down, Halley’s friend refuses to let her son play with Moonee anymore, causing a big falling out between the two mums. This falling out leads to Halley beating up the woman, and later her calling child services on them. The reasoning behind child services coming is because Halley had been selling herself for money, which meant she was incapable of looking after her daughter. As a watcher it’s difficult to assess this situation because really Halley is desperate as she cannot get a job but she needs to pay rent and look after her daughter, but she is also putting Moonee in a very dangerous and unsafe environment. As Moonee learns she is being taken away from her mother, the ending on the movie is her and a friend running away through Disneyland. I also know that this part was filmed on an iPhone which makes it very cool. My favourite character in the movie is Bobby (the motel’s manager) because as much as he puts on the hard exterior, we can see that he is soft inside and really cares for the children, as well as helping out the mothers. When the creepy man is talking to the playing children, Bobby is very good at dealing with the situation. Although I love this movie, I can only rate it a 7/10 because overall it’s just as if nothing happened in the plot and that one significant moment could literally have made the movie a total of 30 minutes. But the rest of it is still nice to watch because it’s just one of those sort of movies.

I loved this movie in many ways, my favourite being the set and design, but also the acting and the plotline - all amazing! Rachel and Nick are in a relationship whilst they are loving in new york. One day when they are out in a cafe, he asks her to accompany him to a wedding in Singapore during spring break, at which he is the best man. She agrees to go with him, knowing nothing about his family and the lifestyle they lead. As they get on the plane, she is already suspicious of what he hasn’t told her when they are seated in first class. They later arrive in Singapore and that is when she realises Nick’s family are ‘crazy rich’. Rachel meets Nick’s family and gets along with many of them, other than Nicks mother. Rachel also doesn’t understand why Nick’s mother wouldn’t like her, mainly on the reason she is not from a rich family, but also because she ‘isn’t really Chinese’. Rachel’s friend from university (Peik Lin) also lives in Singapore so she spends time with her. She also becomes good friends with Nick’s sister, Astrid, and cousin, Oliver. Whilst at the bachelorette party, Rachel meets Amanda, who she later realises is Nick’s ex girlfriend. Amanda, along with other girls at the party, had been plotting against Rachel and even pulled a nasty prank on her, calling her a gold digger. This obviously made Rachel very upset but she stuck in Singapore, dealing with all the hatred she was facing so that she could attend the wedding. The wedding went very well, Rachel arrived in a beautiful dress and had everyone’s heads turning. However, the night was ruined when it was revealed that Nick’s mother had hired a private investigator to find out information about Rachel’s family, things even she didn’t know. This caused Rachel to leave Nick as the family hated her and they weren’t allowed to be together. Nick even proposed to Rachel later on but she turned it down because she couldn’t stand his mother. Rachel’s mother also flew out to Singapore to meet her sad daughter and stay with her at Peik Lin’s house until she was ready to return home. Finally, at the end of the movie, Nick proposes to Rachel again, this time with his mother’s ring, meaning they finally had her blessing. During the movie we also saw snippets of Astrid’s marriage and how that was falling apart. I would have liked to have seen more of that, therefore I am rating it 9/10. I hope if there is a sequel to the movie, that it is focussed on Astrid or another main character, instead of continuing on with Rachel and Nick’s relationship.

When I saw this movie was finally in the cinemas, I had to watch it. Other than showing flashbacks to before the first movie, when the monsters first appeared, the movie basically started where the last movie left off. The father is dead and the family’s home is burnt to the ground, so they set off walking to where they know someone else must be. The father had been communicating by setting fires each night and seeing if other people also did and that is how the family knew they could go there. Once they approach the building, the mother accidentally kicks a trip wire, setting off bottles jangling making noise. Because of this they need to run before the monsters come, but as they are running, the son steps in a bear trap that must’ve been so painful as it tore through his flesh. He screams so loud causing the monsters to come running, but they manage to get inside the building, saving themselves. The man the family find that lives there (Emmett), turns out to be an old friend. His son and wife had died and he was all alone, not wanting any guests as he felt he couldn’t look after them. Later in the movie, the son is listening to the radio and hears the song “somewhere beyond the sea”. The daughter checks on maps and makes the link that the radio is coming from a nearby island. If she can get there, she can set up her hearing aid and people can tune into the radio station to ware off the monsters. She then sets off to travel there, thinking it will only take a day. After the daughter has an accident with a monster, and the mother tells Emmett to find her daughter, he finds her and they continue on the journey to the island together. They had an incident with some survivors and a monster but after all that happened, they set off on a boat to the island, unknowing of the fact a monster was on another boat and also on its way there. Once they were at the island it was all going smoothly, they found out how fine life was there as the monsters cannot swim so they cannot get to them. However the monster comes and it brings its killer instinct. Eventually the daughter gets to the radio station, saving the day by putting her hearing aid to the microphone and then killing the monster on the island. During this time, back at the building the mother, her son and the baby are staying in, they are also being attacked by a monster and the son saves the day by tuning into the radio station and killing the monster with a shotgun. The ending felt happy but all I could think about was what would happen next. Will Emmett and the daughter travel back and collect the rest of the family and take them to the island? Or will the rest of the family travel separately to meet them? Will they set out looking for other people to rescue and take to the island? What about the other monsters because they surely haven’t killed all of them? Perhaps there will be a third movie or perhaps it will stay on a cliffhanger and we will never know. For these unanswered questions, I am rating this movie 8/10, if it was longer with a more explained ending, I could see it being better than the fist movie.

The fact that this movie is based on a true story makes it so much more emotional to watch. It is about 17 year old girl (Lisa) who is kidnapped on her way home from work one night. She is taken to the man’s apartment and repeatedly sexually abused before eventually being released. Lisa managed to escape mainly through her wit and bravery, she knew to leave evidence behind, to make him trust in her and do do whatever else she could to stop this man. Once Lisa escapes, she runs home, only to find her grandmother not believing her. She lives in an awful home, she had been sent there by her mother to help her grandmother, only for her grandmother’s partner to sexually abuse her. All her family except her sister, and aunt and uncle ,who lived far away, where nasty people who, when she said she was abused, told her and even that the police, that it was all lies that she had made up. She gets to talk to the police anyway but none of them believe her, until the sergeant. He believes everything she says, makes her feel comfortable and takes her to meet his daughter that is the same age, all so that she is finally felt believed in has a sort of father figure finally in her life. Lisa knows so many details about the kidnapper, what car he drives, where he lives and even the route they took to travel there. This all that helped him be found and that crime to be linked to a serial killing that he had been doing. Lisa had managed to to get a serial killer caught, saving many lives that could be lost in the future from this horrible man. Her grandmother’s partner had also been arrested. Now Lisa was free to feel safe. She left the home she was staying in to go and live with her aunt and uncle whom she loved and trusted, her sister even came to stay with them too. At the end of the film we saw ,who I assume is, the real Lisa McVey and her future of living with her aunt and uncle for 3 years then going on to work for the police to help track later sex crimes, this was really good to watch knowing that she lived a good life after all that had happened to her. I am rating this movie an 8/10, the acting could have been better and the way the movie was put together could’ve been told in a more tense and thriller sort of way but all together it was a good watch.

I loved this movie so much when it first came out, now watching it again, it’s still good but definitely feels more cringey. I really like the cast and the roles were definitely very well picked, Emma Roberts as ‘Vee’, Dave Franco as ‘Ian’ and also Machine Gun Kelly as ‘Ty’, amazing! Nerve is an online game where watchers pay to watch players do dares, these dares are made by accumulating information from the player’s social medias, which is quite creepy how they find out so much about people, they are for money and often quite crazy. After Vee’s best friend tells her she isn’t cut out to be a player and is just a watcher, Vee sets out to do a dare. She kisses a stranger who turns out to be another player (Ian), after that they team up with each other to do more dares. A romance happens along the way but Vee’s other friend is suspicious of Ian after he finds out Ian was involved in some other dares in Seattle. Vee’s mother is also suspicious of all the money going into their shared bank account. Vee tries to tell the the police about the dares after it becomes too much for her but then becomes a prisoner of the game, later finding out Ian and Ty are also prisoners. To end the game, one of them has to win, so Ian makes a plan with Vee that he will let her win, unknown to the fact Vee has actually planed with Ty for him to win but they actually fake it all. Vee gets fake shot by Ty meaning he wins, through this time Vee’s other friends are hacking the game to shut it down. Once it’s over, Vee reveals to Ian it was fake but luckily it doesn’t matter because there are no watchers left after their identities got revealed. I am rating this movie 8/10 because the casting and acting was really good and I liked Vee’s friendship with with her guy best friend but found it weird how protective he was over her. I also loved her relationship with Ian and all the trust she gained in him in just one night and how much of an adrenaline junkie she became.

I have loved this movie for a long time. The casting is exceptional, the main character being Daisy - played by Saoirse Ronan, with Tom Holland playing Isaac, George MacKay playing Eddie and Harley Bird playing Piper. The idea of the movie being based around WW3 is made really well, unlike a lot of futuristic war movies being really sci-fi and unrealistic, this is very modern and now, making it a lot more gripping because it all feels possible and real. Daisy is an American girl who goes to live in the British countryside with her cousins for the summer. As soon as she arrives, the war catastrophe has already begun. She meets Isaac at the airport and they make their way to the family home, but she is very antisocial and doesn’t want to speak to him or the other family members once they arrive. To cut the early storyline short, they do a lot of activities together and she eventually starts to enjoy their company and becomes very close to Eddie. None of them want to evacuate when they are warned because of the war, so they move out to a barn in the woods and stay there for a few days until soldiers turn up and split the family up, sending the girls to one place and the boys to another. Eddie tells Daisy and Piper to meet him and Isaac back home when they can. Now this is where the story flips and becomes very tense. Daisy and Piper plan to escape and meet the boys back home, but along the way they are caught up in some difficult situations. They are walking for days and days, they run out of water, lose the map and compass and nearly get captured a couple of times, Daisy even shoots two of the guys that were grabbing Piper. As they get closer to home, they notice a sign for the place where Isaac and Eddie had supposedly gone. Daisy doesn’t tell Piper this, but when they get to this place, she finds Isaac dead in a pile with a lot of other bodies. Finally, they make it home, it takes them a while to find Eddie but when they do, he is in extremely bad health. The ending to the movie is Daisy nursing Eddie in the hopes that he will get better, but he is so shook by the effects of the war, that he never even speaks. Although I think this movie is very well written and well cast, I can’t help but overlook the fact that the main love story is based around cousins. I wish the characters were written slightly different such as Eddie being a close friend to the family or Daisy being the step cousin so at least they aren’t blood related. I also really wish Isaac didn’t die, but I guess it is a very important part of the plot and is part of Eddie’s mental issues. For these reasons I am rating it 8/10, because other than that, I think it is perfect.

Because the sequel to this movie is coming out soon, I decided to watch the first one again. It was very gripping and tense to say the least, but as I sat and watched the movie, the time just flew by and it’s difficult for me to piece it all together. Monsters with extreme hearing senses roam the planet, wiping out the majority of people, and those who survived managed it by not making a sound. The family that is the focus of the movie start of by being the mother, father, daughter and 2 sons. However, after the youngest boy makes a sound with a toy rocket one day, he is killed by a monster. Time then jumps to probably a year in the future, the family are of course still grieving, but the mother is now pregnant with another child, who leather after she has given birth, we find out is a boy. To the family he is a replacement of the child that was taken from them, but also a burden as babies make a lot of noise. Monsters roam near where they live, and on the day the mother is giving birth, one decides to enter their home, putting their lives at high risk. The father and other son are out getting food, the daughter supposedly staying with the mother but is nowhere to be seen. The mother gives birth quietly and in much fear as she awaits the rest of the family to return, but the children had got lost in the mayhem. After the father has returned to the mother and hidden her away with the baby, he then goes out to look for the children. They had found each other but an accident had occurred and their lives were at risk. Eventually, the father finds them but he tragically gets killed by a monster, the children are in pain by grief and terror but manage to find their mother with the baby to fight off any other monsters. The daughter is deaf and had realised the whining noise of her hearing aids were actually the weakness of the monsters. She ends up using this combined with her fathers speaker to harm one of the monsters for the mother to shoot it dead, however they can see through the security cameras that more monsters are coming, perhaps they can sense there is a dead one nearby. The movie is left on a cliffhanger as we see the mother and daughter knowing what they have to do to harm the monsters, and the son clinging onto the baby. I am rating this movie 9/10 because it was extremely tense and I can’t wait to see what else happens in the 2nd movie but I do wish the movie had been longer so more could’ve happened.

This movie is about a young woman called Andrea or ‘Andy’ who moves to New York after studying journalism at university. However in New York she finds it very difficult getting a job in journalism and settles for what she thinks will be an easy job as an assistant for the fashion magazine ‘Runway’. Andy’s boss, Miranda (played by Meryl Streep), is a woman who is very hard to please and Andy spends her entire time at Runway trying not to get fired by her and working extremely hard, meaning she barely has any social life left. The first assistant, to whom Andy is 2nd, is called Emily, and she used to be the 2nd assistant before being promoted. She is a sour woman but deep down the watcher can tell she has a soft spot for Andy, although later on in the movie it seems she starts to dislike her more when Emily is at risk of losing her job to her. Andy has an awful fashion sense when she first starts her job, thinking that it didn’t matter as the job wasn’t important to her. As she grew to her senses, with the help of Nigel - the expert who also works there, she gained an amazing style and really started turning heads in the office. The whole time she had the job, she was just so busy she lost the time to spend with her boyfriend, whom she lived with, and her friends, and this really impacted all her relationships as a whole. She also started speaking to another man which really wasn’t a good idea, especially when her and her boyfriend went on a break. The final straw for Emily was when Andy got invited to Paris instead of her. In Paris, after working so hard to please Miranda, Andy finally decided to quit the job, after less than a year of working there, when she realised just how bad if was for her and how much it had changed her as a person. In the end she got back with her boyfriend and had an interview to have a job as a journalist, Miranda had even told the new employer that he would be a fool not to hire Andy. I am rating this 8/10 because although it isn’t really the genre of movie I would watch, I found it quite enjoyable and it had a great cast, I just thought the part of the movie between her first few weeks at the office and going to Paris weren’t very Important to the plot and more could’ve happened in that space.

I think, as a whole, this movie was an alright watch, however I’m not sure if it was all that ‘horror’ as such because most of what happened was very easy to see coming, making it not all that scary. All along, I knew Ma’s basement was dodgy, and that was definitely revealed at the end. A group of teenagers ask a nice looking woman to buy them alcohol one day. This leads to her buying the alcohol on other occasions, then later having parties for them, and other teens, in her basement. She forms strong bonds with the teens as they get up to all sorts of things in her basement but it forever seems a bit weird that a grown woman would want to do things like that. One rule she had was ‘no one is allowed to go upstairs’. Later on, we find out Ma (the woman) went to school with all of these teens parents, making the watcher realise there is something suspicious going on here. In short flashbacks throughout the movie, it’s revealed that Ma was bullied by the teens’ parents and that shows that the reason she is getting close to them is to get her own back for all that they did to her in high school. After two of the girls realise some of their jewellery is going missing, they sneak into Ma’s house to search for it. Here is where they realise Ma has a daughter that Maggie (the main character/one of the girls) knows from school. This girl has been locked in the upstairs of the woman’s house the whole time. Maggie gets really suspicious of Ma and tries to get people to stop going to her house. Ma does some weird things like going round to Maggie’s house and meeting Andy (Maggie’s boyfriend)’s Dad. One night Maggie sneaks out to find out why her friends are at a party in Ma’s basement, after this Ma drugs them and locks them up. All this time she also has Andy’s Dad tied up in her room as he was also suspicious of her. Ma tortures the teens and even kills a police officer, whilst also nearly killing them, but luckily they manage to escape when Ma’s daughter stops her and Maggie’s Mum rescues them. As I said before, I didn’t find this movie too scary because it was very predictable. The scariest bit was actually watching Andy kiss Ma because that was just really weird. I’m rating it 6/10 as it definitely could’ve been scarier and I wish the ending was shown more like the investigation into Mercede’s death after Maggie’s Mum overheard Ma mention it, and did Andy survived being stabbed. I hate when movies are left on annoying cliffhangers. Also, why did the teens keep going to her basement when they clearly knew it was weird? Almost as if the deserved what was coming to them.

I had to watch this movie because of the casting, Jake Gyllenhaal playing Jamie and Anne Hathaway playing Maggie, immaculate! The plot is about a man who starts working as a pharmaceutical rep after being fired as his job as a salesman. He is already a med school/college dropout so he knows his stuff, he also knows how to persuade people to buy his products, whether that’s through flirting or not, he still does it with such ease. Whilst trying to sell a product, he pretends to be an intern for a doctor and witnesses a young woman who has Parkinson's disease be treated by him, this woman ends up being Maggie, i.e. the woman he later falls in love with. She starts off not wanting a relationship, just casual, because of her disease she doesn’t want to be a burden on anyone else by being in a relationship, but later that changes as Jamie keeps falling for her. All his life, Jamie has been the sort of guy who never has a proper relationship and everything is so meaningless to him, therefore when Maggie keeps rejecting the idea of ever wanting a relationship, that makes him fall for her more and more. Maggie and Jamie do end up together, in love with each other, and in all the stages of their relationship, they have many ups and downs - which is what the movie is about. Jamie’s brother goes through a breakup and ends up living with him, sleeping on his sofa, which really doesn’t make much sense as he is very rich from having a software business. Him living with Jamie does become a problem but also helps their bond grow stronger. Jamie introduces him to aspects of life he hasn’t experienced as he is what some would call ‘a nerd’ and therefore missed out on a lot of social things growing up. Jamie and his fellow pharmaceutical rep invest in a drug for men that’s market evolves massively and all of sudden he is very successful, meaning his business is booming and life is becoming much more busy for him so he has less time for Maggie, increasing Maggie’s worry of being a burden on him with the needs that come with her disease. It is difficult to write about the plot of this movie as the majority of it is based around Maggie and Jamie breaking up and getting back together, and storming out on each other and basically just having a lot of intimate time. I am going to rate it a 7/10 because I loved the cast but the plot just wasn’t all that interesting. I also did like the big focus on the struggles of Parkinson’s disease and how the movie really showed how difficult it is.
