My son does ballet, so we are very familiar with the music and story. I felt like this was a beautiful adaptation of the ballet into a film. The pacing and presentation as more of a series of vignettes kept the feeling of a ballet, focusing on the visual story telling. I think that bit was lost on people who found it boring. We enjoyed it very much and would happily watch it again and again!
