It's the Archies - should I say more ? Archies with a beautiful Anglo Indian tadka and I for one was super excited to give this a watch. There is the usual plot of the Archies - Archie with his two beautiful dames - Veronica and Betty, alongwith jughead, Reggie, ethel, moose, dilton, darling pop tates and the parentals for each of the kids. They even managed to fit in Cheryl blossom in some obscure form. Gist of the movie - save Riverdale's historic public garden and the antics that goes with achieving the same.
Kudos on nostalgia galore. It is a costume designer and cinematographers wet dream - every aspect is impeccable - which is what Zoya is known for - her eye for detail. This time however the plot was a bit lacking and could have been executed better. The actors all did a fab job for their debuts - and there is definitely going to be much anticipation to see how diverse each one can get in their careers.
I was also very happy to see the Anglo Indian community portrayed in Indian Cinema with dignity vs the crude forms that Bollywood tries to showcase us. We are Indian - a minority no doubt but very much an embodiment of our country. It felt good to see some of our community and culture portrayed though it was more anglecized than Anglo Indian. None the less thank you Zoya - it was refreshing.
Overall the movie is a good watch, more than the acting I think this will set tone for aesthetics, costume, makeup and I can foresee alot of 60s trends making way in the coming days.
I would recommend watching it for sheer watching and not to intellectualise it too much. It will be a treat and you will definitely want to hunt down your old comics :)
