I came into this movie expecting it to bomb simply because it was from the same producers of Despicable Me. However, looking past some of the dumb humor and the fact that the Grinch seems like an angry gay guy, it wasn’t that bad.
The visuals were fantastic. The creativity that went into the Grinch’s inventions as well as implementing some of the funky vehicles that the citizens ride was a very nice touch. While they didn’t use a lot of the same ones from the original animated movie, it’s more creative to have different creations.
I thought the implementation of the Grinch being an orphan was a bit strange and forced but it made sense.
It was good they kept the original music but I wasn’t fond of the new version of the “Mr. Grinch” song but it wasn’t horrible, either. I suppose one could say that it matched the newer and modern style of it, as well as the fact that it was played when he was getting ready, as opposed to stealing presents.
I believe the Grinch was portrayed as nicer but he was still cruel. For those who say he was too nice have to remember that he learns a big lesson in the end and changes in the end. It’s be obscure to go from totally mean to super nice within minutes.
Furthermore, I loved the small growing bond between Max and the Grinch which pushes the idea that Grinch has been living alone all these years and only has one friend. It makes sense for him to not be as mean to Max.
I also appreciated the gradual change of the Grinch when he learned that Fred had a family and let him go. It shows that he was slowly changing throughout the story rather than all at once.
All and all, there’s much to say about this movie. It is definitely a good family movie to watch and cracks good jokes for all ages to enjoy. I enjoyed it and I grew up watch the original.
