I wish I could give this version '0' stars! I love the book, love the 1994 version (great cast!) and was really looking forward to an updated, big budget version. The entire cast is so gray and two dimensional. And the time jumping takes away from the impact of the original story, especially in the era of Covid 19. At first it seems like just another flu, then a major pandemic and finally an apocalyptic event. But then the supernatural aspect is added in and you come to realize that Captain Tripps was not the end of human life, but just the beginning of the end...rather like The Rapture and Armageddon. That's the major impact of the story. I can follow what's going on because of my familiarity with the plot, but my wife, who hasn't read the book, needed me to tell her what was going on and when the story jumped forward or back. She gave up after the first episode. I watched the second and got more of the same. I will watch the third, but if it's as disjointed as the first two, I'm out. Oh, and I subscribed to CBS All Access primarily to watch this. If this is an example of the original programming they will offer, I'm out there as well.
Update...I just finished episode 8, second to last. The story did straighten out (fewer flashbacks/forwards) but the acting has gotten progressively worse. Amber Heard as Nadine is about as wooden as an actress can get. Compare with Laura San Giacomo from '94. Many of the characters are sadly the same. I find it hard to believe that Stephen King likes this, especially since his specialty in writing is character development and richness. And the whole atmosphere of Las Vegas differs from the book. Here, everyone may be scared of Flagg, but they immerse themselves in the hedonistic culture. In the book, people start to become disenchanted almost immediately because of the draconian rules and fear of offending Flagg. It's more of an oppressive culture. I realize that the writers want to appeal to a younger audience, but this lack of depth kills the story. Yes, I'll finish it just to see the new ending that King has written, but I'll never watch it again. Compare that to having read the book (both original publishing and the updated version from the 90's) several times and watched the '94 mini-series many times.
