At first you question why nearly 8 hours and then you get the epiphany.. the creative process of how the four members of arguably the greatest band of all time get from point A to point B. The minutiae of change from version to version of each song is mesmerising and the clash of egos and personalities is fascinating. Paul is like the fixed metronome driving the band from beginning to end to achieve great things due to his stubbornness and vision while others are often lost or disillusioned. Sublime for any fans of the Beatles or for fans of music or creativity.

I wept like a child at the end if this movie. Deeply uncomfortable and disorienting at times. Anyone with first hand experience of a family member with or who suffered in this way will relate to the pain, guilt and helplessness of a disease that is cruel and unforgiving. Hopkins is incredible. Charming at times, belligerent at others and finally he has only the mind of a lost child begging for the love and warmth of his mother. The direction and sets are incredible in their details with subtle changes and a deep sense of claustrophobia throughout.

One of the greatest series of films the BBC has ever shown. I wept watching each and every one. Powerful, brutal, honest and often difficult to watch. Intellectually and aesthetically beautiful. Oh and did I mention the soundtracks! These are stories that NEED to be told. Steve McQueen.. God Bless you! More, more, more please BBC!
