This show tries to do everything and it does it adequately. All the science fiction tropes are wrapped in this show. Those who dislike this show want something more tightly wound up in one long story and that's not this. If this show came out 5-10 years earlier it would be a massive hit. This show is an amalgamation of Intersteller, Lost in Space, Arrival and the show Lost. It takes itself serious enough to be dark, but not too serious so that the story moves quickly. Quickly to the point of neck snapping storyline to storyline, but it's fun.
This show tells two parallel stories with amazing actors in Katee Sackhoff traveling through space and Justin Chatwin on Earth. Their goal is to understand why this alien artifact has landed on Earth. Sackhoff traveling to the source while Chatwin is trying to communicate with it on Earth.
There is the obvious plot hole of a space crew that is supposed to "save the world" that acts as if they don't know what they're doing. However, the show quickly explains most of the crews motivations through each episode. I agree it's definitely not as believable at first, but that's my only criticism.
I thought the acting was good. I recommend giving this show at least a few episodes.
