Definitely not for the instant gratification, fast food movie crowd that wants dinosaurs, robots, and laser beams all in the same movie. However, for fans of well thought out complex science fiction, and moreover the fans of Frank Herbert’s fine book series, this was what we wanted to see. I was skeptical of the casting choice for Paul and “Poe Dameron” as Duke Leto, but I was proven very wrong. Very well acted for the Duke and the development of Paul in this first installment was key. Yes, it was paced slowly, but in my opinion, made it possible to know Paul and his transformation from unwilling royalty in waiting, to survivalist and eventually (if we get another installment) the leader he will become. I hope there is enough enthusiasm for this series to continue and congratulate Denis Villanueve for being faithful to the source material.
Lastly, for those who have criticized the soundtrack by Hans Zimmer, I say boo to you. Hans Zimmer is a genius of modern composition and will be remembered in history as our age’s Bach, Beethoven, and Handel. He created the depth and scope of the story in a deeply complex and inspired score. The movie review is my opinion. The greatness of Hans Zimmer is simply self evident.
