I'm a connoisseur of drug-related shows and I can tell you this is a good one. I've seen all the Narcos, watched soap operas about El Chapo and Pablo Escobar, and all the various documentary shows about the drug trade from Drugs Inc to Dope. If there's a show about drugs I've probably watched it.
What makes this show special is the cinematography. It's beautifully shot with awesome locations. The camera work and staging do as much acting as the actors themselves. This is helped by the fact that it's a truly worldwide show. It goes from the hills of Calabria, Italy, to the docs of New Orleans, the cramped city of Monterey, and the deserts of North Africa. I like that in each location they actually employed people who looked like they were from there and spoke in accents that sounded authentic. As you watch this show you get a true sense of the global reach of the drug trade.
Sometimes the acting was just okay, except for Harold Toress who gets to play a better version of the role he once played as the leader of the Zetas in Netflix's El Chapo- he was consistently great. There were times when things got a little gimmicky with the repetitive use of parallel storytelling that was cued by the same moody music.
Overall though, it's a pleasure to watch because it's so beautiful and it never lingers in one place long enough for you to notice the cracks in this work of art.
I highly recommend it if you like drug shows.
