I would give it 4.5 stars, so I’ll round up to 5. I enjoy this game just as much as the first dying light, and I think the trade offs between design and gameplay equal out. Yes, this game is very different from the first, but that’s not always a bad thing, especially since a lot of us played the hell out of dl1.
Pros:
-Parkour improvements, feels a lot smoother and more developed
-Crafting/inventory menus are more visually appealing
-Improved stealth options
-New armor class features
-Options available to turn RPG interface on or off (in case the player would prefer more realism)
-More activities and areas to explore
-Graphical improvements
-Excellent music and sound
-New abilities and skill tree design
-Introduction of player dialogue choices
-A lot more hours of content than dl1
Im sure there is a lot more that I’m missing, but here are the cons as well:
Cons:
-There are a lot of bugs that should be fixed
-Story is not bad in my opinion, but could have been better. Not enough emotional weight. About as good as the first game’s story.
-Dialogue choices could have been a little more intricate, not just “left or right”
-Poor artwork design on the mountain region surrounding the area, looks very 2D and fake
-Although combat vs humans feels improved, it could have been better. AI is relatively predictable and “boss fights” are not challenging enough
-Hard mode does not feel very challenging for veteran players
-Some copy and paste areas (like most RPGs now)
Overall, this is a solid game, but it could still use a few hot-fixes and updates to polish it up. Definitely not a standalone game, however. I think newcomers may expect far too much for it compared to other top-RPGs in the industry.
Dying Light 2 is almost exactly what I expected, well done!
