An absolute gem of a film, capturing the stresses and strains of Northern working-class family-life in the 60s. A very strong cast appeared to enjoy working alongside the great James Mason. Basically, misguided tough love which could have destroyed the family is rescued by compassion and the ties that bind. Luckily, the rancid herring which kept re-appearing didn't quite manage to upstage everyone!
