The movie wasn't awful but to say it is based on the novel is a bit of a stretch I think it would have faired better to not include that it was based on the book so those that had read the book would not be disappointed. Characters were completely changed as well as backgrounds. I read about half of the book before watching the movie and the opening scene was changed from the book, similar but way off. I don't know if they were attempting to modernize it since the opening scene in the book happened in 1996 there were no video taking cell phones at that time. I had higher expectations of the movie.
