This show had a lot of potential. Excellent cast with great acting talents but somehow they heavily missed on the direction. Initially, it feels like story of a fat girl, then it moves to become high school drama , then it becomes chick flick, then it revenge and so on. Some people might say it's good to have all in one, and I agree. Who doesn't like a one for all but the one never feels complete in itself. The show never had a direction to move. Keeping audience thinking what would happen next is one thing, show not knowing whereto go next, doesn't sound that great. The story had really strong characters with great potential. Bob-Coralee-Bob trio never ceases to amaze, however their narration seems lost. The lead character ie Patty, could not help but make you hate her. Throughout the show the patty goes on doing extremely horrible things, which is okay if we take humans. But when we watch a show we really have a the desire for the lead character to at some point redeem herself. Like win hearts, bring smiles or tears, make a mark or at least achieve something. Nothing of the sorts happen. Throughout the show, the patty keeps doing idiotic things which makes you wonder, if writer was not so sure how to describe patty.
In all, season1 was a disaster. They didn't achieve anything, even finale ends abruptly. They should probably not continue with Patty character in next season. Rest of the cast seems interesting. If they could figure out a new angle to bring life to the narrative of the story, they might have a shot for next season.
That being said, let's get to simple facts.
The GOOD -
1. The show has an excellent job of highlighting, how to feels to be gay/lesbian. Nonnie struggling to figure out her true herself portrays the struggles of a teenage girl. How does a girl goes through various stages to understand her true self and that inner conflict at every stage is nicely presented.
2. Dallas roberts as Bob Armstrong character. Just let me start by saying OMG, such brilliance. I feel he is the reason you would continue to watch even if you know the narrative is utter garbage. Apart from humour from Bob, the struggle of a man before coming out to society is greatly displayed. It really shows the conflict within a man, the surprise the shock one feels, the emotional turbulence of being a bisexual.
3. The show has other very strong characters which involves the other Bob and Coralee. This characters really bring out your emotions while watching. Even the negative characters are beautifully depicted by Regina and Dixie. And they do so while making you enjoy the show.
The BAD
1. Show suffers a lot from lack of direction.
2. Plot twist with nothing to add to the story. You end up Wondering, what was the point of doing all this twist, if it was not taking story anywhere.
3. Plotholes. Too many things started and just left either half way or to your imagination.
The WORST
1. Hate to say it, but the Patty character simply sucks. Debby Ryan is an excellent actor and has greatly performed trash at hand. However the character just seems shallow, erratic, horrible and more over annoying and disgusting. Not sure if they wanted true portrayal, but it came out that way. According to ME you can't have disgusting and not redeemable killer as a lead character.
2. Climax. Often things go wrong, but we always expect things to become ok in the end. That bleak hope if everything has a meaning keeps us going. But this show just slams the last episode in your face. No Grand build up. Crushing your expectation. And completely illogical ending.
But again that what I feel. You should watch the show and decide if how this see feels for you.
