I don't think it's the critics' fault that they're DEAD WRONG because movie was made for Godzilla fans by Godzilla fans, Not for your average movie-goer by some hot shot director.
This movie is one of the greatest Godzilla films of all time, and easily the best American Godzilla film. Sure there are problems, like bland human characters, over use of rain to cut down on the CG budget and more, but when was GODZILLA, A Huge MONSTER known for HUMAN characters? Or AMAZING and REALISTIC special effects for that matter? Godzilla has been known for two things: A message (Such as one against nuclear testing) and Monster Fights. While the film largely brushes over its environmental message, the film has the greatest and most visually stunning Monster Fights seen thus far.
