Warning, this review will have spoilers.
I wasn’t bracing myself for some hidden gem that should have taken home a bunch of awards, but I’d never seen Sam Elliot in a bad movie so I gave it a chance despite the almost comical title.
Where to begin…the plot was just all over the place. It felt like somebody had 2 different ideas for a movie and when they couldn’t make either a long enough story, and just meshed them together. Then once the full script was finished, somebody pulled a handful of pages out and shuffled the rest up. There were so many plot holes, and movie was all over the place. It kept jumping back and forth from current to past time. Which is fine, but it got to be an unnecessary amount.
Despite the title pretty much telling you what is going to happen, there was this lengthy time filling build up to him shooting Hitler as if we were supposed to be surprised when it happens. And then we transition that into him being asked by a man from the government (who happens to be the only other person that knows he killed Hitler) to track down and kill big foot. While it begins to seem like he is somehow qualified to do this because of him killing hitler, it is then revealed it’s because he is 1 of only 3 people in existence immune to a plague Bigfoot is spreading. They say the government had his blood and was able to test it, but ignore the fact the government wouldn’t have everyone else’s, but they’re still going to recruit an old man to “save the world”.
So now he’s going to be the man to kill hitler AND Bigfoot, but really neither are related in the grand scheme of things. Once he agrees to do it, we get a scene of him picking out his gear and being dropped off. The very next FRAME is him shooting Bigfoot in the head. I actually rewound when it happened because I thought I surely had to have just spaced out for a minute, but nope. Absolutely 0 context to him finding Bigfoot. Despite the headshot, big foot survived. We get more time filler of him tracking and finding the beast and eventually after a couple of fight scenes, killing it. Next FRAME we are at his funeral. After 5-10 minutes of movie all you know is he supposedly “left for vacation and never came back”. 0 context as to why everyone thought he was dead, because the following scene his brother is out fishing and out pops Sam Elliot. They have a chat and then we’re suddenly back to Sam in his house. At this point I thought we had jumped back in time to post killing Bigfoot but pre funeral. After a while I realize no, we are just continuing this story for absolutely no reason at this point. And just as the movie went with missing chunks of explanation or build up, it just ends. That’s it, movie over, sorry for the past 90 min of your life.
I also didn’t mention, throughout the whole movie there is a love interest. He dates her before the war and then all we know is in his old age, she’s not with him. Outside of 1 mention of her passing early in life during his eulogy, we are given no idea how/when she actually dies. Just that Sam Elliot is still heart broken about her. Just another detail in the movie that didn’t add anything to the movie, but created more time filler and plot holes.
