I was super conflicted while writing this review and full of mixed emotions. On one hand, I love the storyline. Queenie represents the everyday woman who struggles with difficult situations and finding a way out of them. In a sense she is every young woman growing and figuring out life as we enter adulthood. Candice Carty-Williams did a great job with character development and complexity. However, on the other hand I could not get over the horrible writing. Although the storyline and characters are great, I cannot ignore the poor writing skills. As a Afro-Latina, I wanted to support this book so badly and give it five stars, but I just could not. I found myself struggling to write this review because I want to support all minority women authors and see us all succeed. However, I must be honest and give a fair review. I do wish Candice Carty-Williams all the best of luck in her career and cannot wait to see more from her as she grows and mature as a writer.
