The movie might be 20 years old, but you'd never know it. It's a sweet fantasy we probably all secretly harbor, considering how difficult it is to find "the one" with whom to spend our lives.
For everyone poo-pooing how Sara and Jonathan end their relationships to search for their true loves, keep in mind they end the relationships BEFORE they marry. They recognize the people they're engaged to aren't a good fit. Sara's musician boyfriend is nearly completely absorbed by his musical career and touring, oblivious to the very real demands of Sara's career, even when she points them out. Jonathan's fiancee... well, fidelity isn't exactly her strong suit.
I only gave the movie 4 stars, instead of 5, primarily because of how silly the character of "Lars" is. Jon Corbett is a wonderful actor and was just incredible in Northern Exposure." Too bad he plays such a silly, unbelievable character. Not the musician (he is one in real life). The goofy "eastern mystic" musician. (The instrument played in the movie is real... but normally only played at important ceremonies, like marriages.)
Ironically enough, there really was serendipity and perhaps destiny in Jon Corbett's life. He was set up with a date... with Bo Derek. They've been together for just over twenty years... and married in 2020. Destiny? They met when this movie was being made. You decide.
A lovely, sweet movie. Don't over think it, enjoy it.
