I love alternate history stories, especially ones that add an element of wonder to it. Man in the High Tower. Inglorius Basterds. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. It’s probably due to my love of time travel.
Motherland Fort Salem is an alternate timeline where the Salem Witch Trials revealed REAL witches. Instead of reacting in fear, however, they make a pact with the American government. Use your powers for the American people, and the American people will honor you. They become the military force throughout the rest of American history leading to today.
A witch terrorist organization known as the Spree emerge, using a spell or curse as a bomb to force civilians to kill themselves. These scenes are brutal and graphic. So much so that the end of episodes they post the suicide helpline.
The “science” of the magic, and the effects involved, are well done. The world feels consistent and lived in.
There is history that is well thought out and realized. The show basically boils down to “Military School Drama”. There are lineage rivalries. Spies and misinformation. Training, interrogation, and insecurities. It’s all written well and performed by a diverse cast of mostly women.
I also want to point out the cinematography and lighting. Sunbeams shining through windows with lots of sepia tones adds an element that stylizes this series I really admire. It’s a very attractive looking show with an aire of nostalgia.
