I usually would rate movies like this 1 star but because of Forest Whitaker, Grace Dove, and the special effects, I gave an extra star. SPOILERS AHEAD.
The title is almost ironic considering “How it Ends” has no actual ending. I was legitimately surprised by the abrupt ending. It’s as if a student rushed through their project last minute and ended up not finishing it. That’s what this movie’s story feels like. I can hardly call it a story to be honest. It was more like things happening one after another. The worst part of all of it is that everything seems connected somehow (or so the movie hints at it) and by the end, they never actually connect. That’s right. The characters didn’t know what was happening, the audience didn’t know what was happening, EVEN THE WRITERS DIDN’T KNOW WHAT WAS HAPPENING. It’s like the writers wanted to lead up to this grand epic reveal except... they didn’t know what it was. It’s frustrating watching this thinking there was some explanation to all these terrible disasters only to discover that the writers never got that far. And then they cast Forest Whitaker and Grace Dove who honestly carried the whole film along with the FX crew. All the characters were boring to watch except for the father played by Whitaker and Ricki played by Dove. It would have been a way better film in my opinion if one of them were the main characters instead.
This movie might be some nice background noise I suppose if you like watching disaster films because I will say some of the visuals were gorgeous. But it’s definitely not worth sitting down and actually paying attention to for 2 hours because it’ll be 2 hours of your life completely wasted.
