A terrible, rushed, and oversimplified attempt at creating authenticity and showcasing Asian cultures. The movie panders to the young audience and tried so hard to appeal to the Asian demographic. It’s a worse attempt than Mulan 2020, and that says a lot. It is painfully cliche and littered with plot holes.
The main character was sent on a quest on which she accompanied neon space chickens to look for something NONE of them knew what it is or how it look like. You didn’t think to clarify w miss Moon Goddess before you go?!? The “gift” ended up being hidden inside a mooncake made by the stepmom, who the main character despised at this point in the story. She hated the stepmom and put the moon cake away but it somehow is the only thing she packed for the trip to the moon which then somehow be the exact thing she was looking for 🤷🏻. Convenient!
What aimed to mimic a Disney musical ended up being a basic storyline jam packed with cringey, long-winded, forgettable songs. Songs in great musicals serve a purpose in the plot or character development. In this case, they feel more like attention grabbers for an otherwise slow movie. The ancient goddess of the moon rapped at one point so there’s that.
The character designs are great as to be expected from the legendary animator Glen Keane, and so are many of the visuals. However, the environment design on the moon felt so simple and unclear. It’s a neon-colored mess of textureless geometrical shapes that are unclear what they are or if the theme was meant to be futuristic or traditional. The moon creatures were colored orbs with literal smiling faces...like literal smiling faces a child would draw.
This was highly anticipated for there is rarely ever a big-budget movie showcasing Asian customs and cultures, especially one directed by Glen Keane. Maybe they should have stuck to telling the goddess’ origin as it is a great love story.
