It‘s all just my opinion but yeah I’m way disappointed, this was overhyped and meh at best. The issue is both the plot and the characters. It’s a slow burn that doesn’t pay off anywhere near as well as expected. Plot is all over the place, seems to be going in one direction (condensed story about childhood trauma or maybe a psychosocial allegory of losing touch with one’s roots?) then it goes in another (national/widespread repercussions of othering people?) then another (cloning story?) but it never commits to exploring the ideas it dabbles in and so neither the narrative or it’s attempted themes ever really landed for me, the themes felt shallow in fact. Many many dumb decisions by the characters (I’d think a family of black ppl in a modern horror movie would be smarter than this). Soo much inappropriately placed tension cutting humor it started to feel more like a Marvel-toned movie than a horror. Very inconsistent internal logic to the clones. Idk just a lot of stuff. Add to all that, I didn’t even jump once or ever feel my body tense up at any point, like even the jump scares, which typically can provide a physiological reaction regardless of plot quality, were mad weak. So I just left it feeling disappointed and like it was mediocre but will be overhyped because of Peele’s name recognition. That said this all my opinion and it might land different for you! Just gotta manage expectations.
