I love the show- in all its incarnations. So thumbs up. However ............
My issue with this NCIS and the others is that, sometimes, they don’t do their homework. This is especially true when it comes to anything related to the Internal Revenue Service.
At the very least the writers should contact somebody who sctually knows something about dealing with IRS audits and the results before they go writing scenarios into their scripts that simply don’t happen not anymore. The IRS has been constrained by the tax pair a bill of rights for more than a decade. The riders need to come into the 21st-century.
I’m sitting here watching the most recent episodes of NCIS New Orleans and they got the IRS doing something to la Salle that it cannot legally do anymore. They are required to work with the taxpayer on the debt. The taxpayer has a legal right to see the reports, look at how the IRS arrived at its conclusions and dispute thise conclusions in several ways - reconsiderations, appeals and tax court. Its not just “This is how much you owe. You have to pay us or we take your stuff.” Even if the taxpayer cannot pay in full there are modified installment arrangements, offers in compromise which can literally settle million dollar debts for pennies on the dollar.
This is what I do for a living. I just settled two multi-million dollar tax debts for less than $10k each!
Plus, the Agent/auditor doesn’t do the negotiations. Once the auditor has submitted their findings it goes to a revenue officer who has to give the taxpayer 90 days to set up a payment plan or appeal the decision.
What is happening to ls Salle - the debt, the demand for immediate payment, and the entire 3-day time frame to dispute the findings is completely unrealistic.
