The movie starts out with the exploration of a gem embedded in otherwise useless rock. Then we meet Sandler's character- Howard Ratner- the useless rock, who is wholly unlikeable. Yes, we all have family or friends who are lecherous thieves lying cheating stealing their way through life but rarely if ever is it all one person. No, it is usually an adulterous uncle or a friend's junkie kid, rarely, if ever, is it all in one. Howard Ratner is all of those things wrapped into one; He is simply unlikeable. In It's a Wonderful Life, the whole of Bedford Falls wanted George Bailey to live. In Uncut Gems, the whole world wishes Howard Ratner would die.
