Wow, okay, I haven't given this game a review here yet. Well, here you go:
Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate hits different. That's how I've come to describe it in comparison to other games like Worldborne and Rise. Sure, the newer games are more impressive in almost every way - graphics, fluidity, accessibility, etc - but there's something about GU that just always has me coming back craving *more*. GU is like water in contrast to Worldborne's mountain dew or Rise's Coca-cola. Mountain dew and Coca-cola both taste phenomenal compared to "boring old water" - and yet, after a certain amount of time, the sugary soda starts losing its appeal. You start to get thirsty for the basics again. You start to get thirsty for something like GU.
There are a lot of reasons why this game shouldn't be recommended to just anyone owning a switch, as many reviews will have already informed you that GU is probably one of the least newcomer-friendly entries since 2nd gen. To that, I would say this: in order to have a full appreciation for MHGU, you need to have a basic understanding of old gen's way of doing things. Try your hand at Tri or 4U first (although I will warn you that, if you do get into either of those games, it will be awhile before you can pull yourself away to actually play GU). Once you get a feel for the old mechanics, GU will only naturally start becoming more appetizing as you realize what it's offering you. Hell, once you get to that point, GU might even start looking like a bona fide console-seller. That's how powerful this game is.
I'm not going to break this game into the sum of it's parts, as there are plenty of reviews and videos that do that just fine. I'm writing this review purely as a testament to how this game makes me feel. If you want that feeling for yourself, depending on where you're at with the series, it may take some time. But from my own experience, the prize was so worth the venture.
