To be honest...
I really liked it! In my opinion, this has to be the most underrated movie of 2017. It isn't perfect, it's got some dumb and unexplained moments for sure. The best parts of the movie is the character development and the performances. This is an origin story, so character development and expanding universes are some of the KEY elements in not just any movie, but in an origin story involving a team of superheroes, like the Power Rangers (Something that Fant4stic FAILED at). The characters are very relatable, particularly the Blue Ranger because he's autistic, LIKE ME! The finale was SO satisfying and worth the wait in my opinion. The special effects were pretty solid, especially combining practicality and CGI, (although there's one scene involving FX that didn't work for me) and the suits are actually a combo of practicality and CGI. Now my negatives involve: Goldar's design; they took his name literally. And the pacing could have been a bit faster.
Overall, if you like Power Rangers you're gonna want to take a look, there's a lot of Easter eggs and fan service to keep us entertained until the finale, but don't expect superpower beatdown from the very beginning but until the finale. The performances were great (not Academy Award level), not absolutely everything from the source material was respected but not so disrespecting like Dragon Ball Evolution, the two tones could be a little bit better consistent but it's tolerable, and yes the product placement didn't bother me... because it was only ONE product placement. If you're skeptical of going into this movie, I'd say give it a watch, but don't expect it to be an Academy Award winner.
Overall Score: 7.8/10 (B+) GOOD BUT NOT AMAZING.⭐⭐⭐⭐
P.S. I hope we get a sequel, don't go for reboot just because it underperformed at the box office, Hasbro...
