There are no spoilers in this review! TL;DR: Mortal Engines is an unappreciated and underrated fun movie that has compelling characters and an interesting world in which it's built upon. The critics are wrong. Go see the movie.
I'm really getting tired of film critics just eviscerating movies for one thing and then praising another when they did the same damn thing as the one they put down...
I don't understand why there is so much hatred and disdain for this movie, especially when we live in a time where we have multiple movies about the same heroes fighting another threat and gender swapped remakes of older movies. I would say that those movies are also just rehashs of the same old stuff and ripping cliches from other media, but that doesn't mean that I don't enjoy the movies. Not to mention that we seem to have run out of ideas for movies because I'm seeing more and more how books are being made into movies, such as this one.
The visuals were stunning and the acting was really good. The story/screen writing was well written and captured my interest easily. The character progression was mostly believable.
I say mostly because there is a romantic pairing, and one is told that there in love, but this pairing didn't feel forced and more believable compared to some of the popular Rom-Coms out there.
There were a couple of times in the beginning where they made a big deal about showing known items of now that made me roll my eyes a little.
There were times that I was going my chair out of suspense and worry for certain characters and other times where I had to wipe tears from my eyes.
I urge anyone reading to go see the movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will be picking up the books. I doubt we'll see a continuation on screen of the series. There were several big name and money films that came out along with this one and the critics have scared away anyone else who might have gone to see it.
