**Book and Movie spoilers**
I watched The Tender Bar immediately on finishing the memoirs of the same name and was really curious to see how the movie would bring some of the characters to life.
Unfortunately I think this is what is most lacking and why the movie adaptation just isn’t very interesting.
The cast is actually very good, acting couldn’t be faulted. But big characters and personalities are found wanting.
In the memoirs, perhaps the most intriguing characters are Steve (the bar owner), the barfly’s, and the bookshop duo; yet none of these characters feature in the movie and the characters we do get are very two dimensional, not resembling the great characters in the book.
Uncle Charlie is probably the most exciting character, but he’s portrayed as a cliché superhero uncle which actually ruins the character for me and makes his relationship with JR very predictable.
Sidney has none of the magic of the book and it isn’t clear why JR falls for her or why he keeps returning to her.
If you’ve read the book you’ll no doubt be left wondering how it’s so boring. Good storylines like JR turning up to The Times with a black eye for an interview are replaced with JR turning up to The Times and being hired!
I gave it two stars because it was nice to see faces attached to the names, even if in most cases they didn’t make sense.
Probably worth a watch, but don’t expect any fireworks.
