I loved this show at first. I thought the writing was amazing, but the last few episodes have definitely been disappointing. Season one does a great job at using humor about the time period’s patriarchy to highlight today’s feminism. And it worked. Further into the show, with the introduction of the civil war, I figured the writers would apply that same humor to highlight the civil rights movements of today. In recent episodes, it’s almost as if the writers ditched the humor and just started adding in romance for the sake of drama. First off, true historical details to write about for a fast-paced drama will run out fast, leaving the writers having to make up lies about Emily Dickinson’s life. Second, I thought this was a comedy? Jokes opposing racism and sexism won’t get old-just look at SNL.
