Episodes 1-7 have been building towards the season final, the mystery of who is the dragon reborn and the significance of this character. Its clearly been challenging fitting the character development needed for 7 main characters, and the actors have done a great job. Visually its impressive, and the landscapes are impressive.
Despite some story pruning from the Books, my main issue is with the creative/writing direction that the season final took.
The season final should be a huge moment which in the books is where the dragon reborn revealed, the battle with the forsaken(ancient evil channelers) who laid a trap for Rand to get him to the Eye. Rands power is exposed, allowing him to break through the foresakens trap. He then heads to the battle to help turn the tide and rallying the army before heading back to the forsaken to defeat them.
The army fighting in Tarwins Gap are desperately outnumbered and near breaking point when the dragon reborn appears, he cut downs the Trollocs and Fades just enough for the soldiers to rally and defeat the remaining forces. Its an amazing moment in the books. Its inspirational and shows the importance of the Dragon Reborn as a figure of inspiration and leadership. Tingles, epic!
What we got instead was puzzling, and anti climatic. We got some mind games from the forsaken, which didn't feel genuine, and no real battle at all. The Sa'angreal was introduced? Which is an odd choice and takes away from Rand own power. Its also puzzling that Nynaeve gets shown as really powerful but Rand has his moments taken away, he is the main protagonist and the dragon reborn.
With the Battle for Tarwins Gap we had some minor character channeler join with 4 other female untrained chanellers including Egwene and Nynaeve to wipe out the entire army. This just felt hollow and unearned, and really diminished from Rand's huge moment, and the significance of the Dragon Reborn. We also have Nynaeve and Egwene being way too powerful too quickly. They are amazing characters and have ridiculously good moments later on in the books, and they are have rushing them, for little gain. Build up is important so the scenes and character development feels deserved and has meaning.
The writers seem to be going out of their way to cut back Rand powers and contributions, and dial up Nynaeve and Egwene's power and it does nothing for the story.
I really want this show to make a turn around, I love the books so much, and love the story, The actors are strong choices, and it has potential to be really good. But the writers/creative directors need to be changed to people who actually love and care about the story. Instead of changing things that serve little purpose to the story.
Season 1 is a solid disappointment that definitely had potential if it had writers and a creative director that actually had a vision and a passion for telling Robert Jordon's Story.
